When in "Manual Focus" mode, hold SHIFT and RIGHT CLICK, then move the mouse up and down to change the focus. (default key bindings)

If you don't have a mic, you can use a camera to communicate quickly by taking a photo and writing on it, instead of having to craft notes.
You can change your fov to 70 to get more zoom.
